Relief Maintenance Worker

About Red Door: Red Door is a non-for-profit organization. The mission of the Red Door Shelter is to end homelessness for each family that comes through our doors by providing a safe, temporary refuge and critical services to support them in healing, rebuilding their lives and integrating back into a community. At Red Door, we strive for quality care, advocacy, collaboration, integrity and accountability.
 
Responsibilities:
1)          General Repairs
  • Change lightbulbs
  • Apply caulking in bathrooms as needed
  • Priming and painting
  • Stripping and refinishing of wood
  • Clear blocked drains
  • Repair cabinets and drawers
  • Repair drywall patching and paint
  • Assemble furniture
  • Report a list of required hardware and/or tools to the supervisor

2)        Maintenance Duties
  • Daily removal of garbage ­to onsite private dumpster, dismantling cardboard for recycling and other general maintenance of the organization in the garbage room
  • Weekly: putting out garbage or recycling bins and compost bins according to the City of Toronto scheduled for collection
  • Dismantling of furniture items
  • Lawn mowing
  • Power washing of sidewalk, ramp, and children's play area
  • Complete a walkthrough of each floor and the common areas

3)          Safety Inspections
  • Daily: inspects interior and exterior of buildings and reports any anomalies to supervisor (ex. exposed wiring, structural damage, other safety concerns)
  • Daily: inspects playground and outdoor play equipment and reports hazards to supervisor (ex. broken wood plank on play set, broken bench)
  • Complete inspection after delivery of all equipment (loading dock, loading door, dolly, security doors)

4)          Receiving Deliveries and General Labour
  • Receive weekly deliveries and donations
  • Plays a vital role in supporting the outreach and kitchen staff by unloading and unpacking shipments
  • Assists with moving items as needed throughout the shelter
  • Inform any parties that are receiving the items from the delivery that they have been delivered

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools
  • Experience performing routine maintenance
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing from 15-25 pounds
  • Ability to maintain focus while working individually
  • Professional presentation and attitude.
  • All staff, volunteers, and students require criminal reference checks. This includes vulnerable sector screening, which must be updated every three years.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Must have a valid standard first aid certification including infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
